For Adults Only?

The Supreme Court did not ban pornography unless it was obscene, but it did support state laws that require websites to verify that users are adults, meaning over 18. Pornography that is legal free speech for adults may be considered obscene, meaning harmful to children, if it meets three criteria: Prurient Appeal, Community Offensiveness, and Lack of Literary Merit.

A gigantic problem here is that all of this is interpreted differently by different people. "Prurient" means causing excessive interest in sex or portrayals of sex in other people or characters. A majority of people, including many people under 18, have an interest in sex and learning about what other people do sexually. Someone has to decide what is normal and what is excessive. Where is the dividing line?

Gaia Chi Lit, as a publisher, plans to offer some books or stories that include crude or sexual language and characters having sex as part of their lives, sometimes even the main focus of their lives during the period of the story. If those stories do not yet appear in this section of our website, we are still researching and implementing an age gate to meet legal requirements.

A major theme of our publishing is the process of healing that helps us learn to accept and love ourselves and find love for and with others. Love doesn't have to be romantic or sexual, but since those types of love are popular, many stories include them. Incidentally, older children under 18 can benefit from stories of healing and love. Ironically, many children who can't legally be exposed to erotic stories are already having sex, often without self-acceptance, self-caring, and awareness of what can go wrong.
